About the Museum

The National Museum of the Mujahid is a prominent historical and cultural landmark in Algeria, dedicated to preserving the memory of the Algerian Revolution and commemorating the struggle of the Algerian people against French colonization. The museum is located at the lower section of “Maqam El Chahid” on a high plateau in Algiers, making it a strategic site symbolizing the sacrifices of the Mujahideen and martyrs for freedom and independence.

History of the Museum

The National Museum of the Mujahid was established on December 2, 1972, under Ordinance No. 66-72, with its first headquarters located on Victory Street in El Biar. During the presidency of the late Chadli Bendjedid and after the construction of Maqam El Chahid, the museum was relocated to Riadh El Feth and inaugurated on July 5, 1982. In 1993, it was placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Mujahideen and renamed from the “Museum of Jihad” to the “National Museum of the Mujahid,” becoming a dedicated institution for preserving historical heritage related to the popular resistance, the national movement, and the War of Liberation.
