About the Museum

The National Museum of the Mujahid is a prominent historical and cultural landmark in Algeria, dedicated to preserving the memory of the Algerian Revolution and commemorating the struggle of the Algerian people against French colonization. The museum is located at the lower section of “Maqam El Chahid” on a high plateau in Algiers, making it a strategic site symbolizing the sacrifices of the Mujahideen and martyrs for freedom and independence.

History of the Museum

The National Museum of the Mujahid was established on December 2, 1972, under Ordinance No. 66-72, with its first headquarters located on Victory Street in El Biar. During the presidency of the late Chadli Bendjedid and after the construction of Maqam El Chahid, the museum was relocated to Riadh El Feth and inaugurated on July 5, 1982. In 1993, it was placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Mujahideen and renamed from the “Museum of Jihad” to the “National Museum of the Mujahid,” becoming a dedicated institution for preserving historical heritage related to the popular resistance, the national movement, and the War of Liberation.

Museum Structure and Sections

The museum consists of several key sections highlighting different stages of the Algerian struggle:

  • Museum Hall: The main entrance that introduces visitors to the museum’s atmosphere.
  • Resistance Wing: Showcases the history of popular resistance since the French occupation in 1830.
  • Liberation Revolution Wing: Highlights the events and developments of the November 1954 Revolution.
  • National Movement Wing: Covers the evolution of political and revolutionary thought before the revolution.
  • Independence Wing: Displays Algeria’s achievements after gaining independence in 1962.
  • Dome of Remembrance: A space dedicated to honoring and remembering the martyrs.

Museum Objectives

The museum aims to achieve several key goals, including:

  • Collecting and restoring historical documents and artifacts related to resistance and the War of Liberation.
  • Displaying these collections to the public to enhance historical awareness.
  • Recording and preserving testimonies from Mujahideen for researchers and students.
  • Organizing permanent and temporary exhibitions to educate visitors on Algeria’s struggle.
  • Welcoming visitors daily from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM
